The Joint Development Project will set a model of supply-side reform in China’s sports industry
Beijing and Zhangjiakou were awarded to co-host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games on July 31st, 2015, which has then sparked the winter sports boom in China with joint efforts of the national sports community.
But at the same time, it is clearly acknowledged that China has been poor in both the basic resources and talents for winter sports and such situation is still not changed.
Therefore, it is urgent to make up the deficiency. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China(CPC), Xi Jinping, general secretary of CPC Central Committee, has paid close attention to sports and pointed out the focus for the development of sports by making important instructions for many times.
By materializing the supply-side reform, the agreement on cooperation and joint development between the Winter Sports Management Center and HC Kunlun Red Star Club of China International Cultural Communication Center will enhance the efficient supply and use of social resources and promote resource integration and structural adjustment.
Such practice will make sure the development of ice hockey in China guided by government, participated by the society and decided by the market whilst the sport has already been highly professional and market-oriented in the international stage.
During the annual sessions of NPC and CPPCC National Committee of this year, it has become a hot topic to use the strength of the market and the society to support the development of sports.
In the future, there will be a growing trend to get involved more and more social and market resources and contribute to the development of China's sports industry.
In response to such trend, China National Youth Ice Hockey Team and HC Kunlun Red Star will provide a successful model of market-oriented reform in the sports community by their joint efforts.
An International Team will offer scientific help for the National Youth Ice Hockey Team
As planned by the joint development project, HC Kunlun Red Star Club will offer comprehensive, effective and scientific assistance to cultivate talents for the National U20 and U18 Men’s Ice Hockey Teams as well as U18 Women’s Ice Hockey Team. In order to fill up the talent pool for 2022 Winter Olympics, it intends to introduce better ideas, professional team and establish an advanced system of talent development.
The professional and international team of Red Star will draw up a systematic, comprehensive and scientific training program based on the status of the National Youth Team. It will improve various pillars of the whole system, such as competition, scouting, physical strength, evaluation, nutrition, medical, rehabilitation and etc..
The club also reveals that it will soon apply DNA and food allergen tests for the three youth teams in the cooperation project. By doing so, the training for all the young athletes at their growth stage will be more reasonable to meet nutritional needs, improve the physical performance of Chinese hockey players and make up their deficiency in physical confrontations.
At the end of February, a committee of international experts was established in Red Star Club. Eight world class professionals of ice hockey, including Phil Esposito, Mike Keenan, Jr. Digit Murphy and Aleksander Barkov, will offer advice and suggestions and combine the actual situation with advanced teaching experiences of North America, Russia and Finland to explore the right direction for the development of ice hockey in China.
After signing the joint development agreement, Red Star Club will arrange the three national youth teams to compete in high level ice hockey leagues based on their current performance. The U20 men's team will participate in MHL, the world's highest level of youth league and the U18 men’s team will be able to compete in the Northwest Hockey League, which is well-known in North America. And the U18 women's team will join in JWHL. The idea to practice by competing in real matches is believed to completely change the national youth teams, which have been lacking of both competition experiences and opportunities.
In January 2017, Red Star acquired Little Wolf International Ice Hockey Club, symbolizing the establishment of its education sector. During the press conference, Zhao Xiaoyu, board chairman of the Club, stated that Red Star will also open international training camps in Boston and other areas of North America. He said the university league of ice hockey in North America will be taken as reference to enable members of national youth teams to play games and get educated at the same time. Such design of the system will not only enhance players’ intellectual education but also remove worries of young athletes and their parents by providing them options between to become members of professional ice hockey clubs like Red Star and to represent universities to play. It is reported that Red Star has also referred to the scholarship system of American universities to set its own incentives and allowances for youth team players.
HC Kunlun Red Star has opened the door for overseas Chinese to play a role in China
In the season of 2016 to 2017, Red Star successfully progressed to the postseason after its first round of competition in KHL and to create the so-called “First Year Miracle”, contribution from Chinese players cannot be ignored.
Zach Yuen, one of the Chinese athletes from Canada played all the 65 games along the whole season and scored three goals, making himself one of the most eye-catching players in the team.
Such “Chinese Power” has also inspired Red Star to be more aware of their importance to help ice hockey in China to catch up. So when this season is over, the committee of international experts will start recruitment in various areas around both Beijing and North America in order to expand the international influence for the club and kick off strategic deployment of the team’s talent pool for the next season.
Such movement is expected to fuel the team at the frontline with more “China Power” and give opportunities to Chinese ice hockey players to come back and contribute.
Since its establishment, Red Star has received extensive media coverage and support from both home and abroad. Leaders from CCTV, Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily Online and Sina as well as other domestic and foreign media attended the press conference for the project of cooperation and joint development and also witnessed the release of "Chinese Ice Hockey Plan for 2022". By integrating media resources, Red Star is building up its marketing platform to strengthen media outreach and attract public attention for the future of ice hockey in China.
As China's first high-level professional ice hockey club, Red Star sees the cooperation and joint development project with the National Youth Team as merely the starting point of a long journey. And both the club and the Winter Sports Management Center expressed the intention to deepen mutual cooperation on joint development for the National Ice Hockey Team.
Since the beginning of this year, Xi Jinping, general secretary of CPC Central Committee visited Chongli and Beijing to inspect the preparation progress for Beijing Winter Olympics and put forward an exciting appeal that a strong youth generation will lead to a flourishing nation and a nation strengthens along with its physical education.
There are five years ahead to embrace the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. The release of the ice hockey plan is of vital importance because the National Youth Ice Hockey Team represents the hope of the sport development in China.
The joint development project will create a sound marriage between China International Cultural Communication Center and the Winter Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sport. Matching with China’s overall strength and international influence, it will not just meet the public needs to develop winter sports but also respond to the call of the General Secretary.
Honored to take upon such a historic mission, Red Star is committed to the development of ice hockey in China and will spare no efforts to make breakthrough on the ice rink of 2022.
